Nova was a little girl who loved nights. Every night, when the lights went out, she sat by the big window in her room and looked at the gray sky. She waited for a friend to appear from among the clouds.
Suddenly, a small, shining star twinkled at her from far away. The name of this star was “Sota.” Sota separated from the other stars and slowly slid downward until it reached Nova’s home.
Nova carefully turned the window handle and opened it. The cool air and the scent of night-blooming flowers came inside. Sota, like a light, delicate bubble of light, flew into the room and circled around Nova’s head.
Nova cupped her hands like a small bowl. Sota gently sat on her hands. Sota was very warm and soft, just like a piece of sunny cloud. Nova whispered in her ear: “Welcome, Sota!”
Sota began to fly around the room. She sat on Nova’s small wooden horse. Suddenly the wooden horse’s mane started to sparkle, as if Sota had given it life.
Nova was thrilled to see all this beauty. With her little finger, she stroked Sota. The whole room now smelled like dreams and calm, and there was no dark corner left in it.
Together, they looked at the moon from behind the window. The moon shone in the sky like a big, silvery piece of cheese. Sota waved to the moon, and the moon, too, answered her with a smile.
Little by little, Nova’s eyelids grew heavy. She gave a big yawn and rubbed her eyes. It was time for Nova to travel to the land of sweet dreams.
Nova went under her warm, soft blanket. Sota sat on the edge of her bed and gave off a very gentle light, like a night-light, so her friend wouldn’t be scared.
When Nova fell asleep, Sota quietly flew out the window and returned to her place in the sky. Now, every night Sota stood right there, watching from afar over the beautiful dreams of her little friend, Nova.
